Language Differences

Knowledge of Italian is not necessary to participate in this program. In most cases, at least one member of a host family will speak some English.  Participants who request to be placed in elementary, middle or high school will often work with the English teacher.  English is a required subject in schools and sometimes begins in preschool. While challenging, language difference have not been an major obstacle for past participants of this program.

Becoming an Italian language learner in a home, school and community allows participants to understand the experiences that English language learners (ELLs) encounter in the United States.  Participants learn practical strategies for supporting their future ELLs and their families.
